H. A. Leveson ‘The Old Shekarry’
Sport in Many Lands
Publisher: Frederick Warne and Co.
London, C.1877
The first edition was published in two volumes by Chapman and Hall, London, in 1877. This edition, published by Frederick Warne, London, is undated but presumably later than the Chapman and Hall edition and earlier than the combined edition of 1890. It appears to be unrecorded in all the usual bibliographies and only one copy of this edition on COPAC but with no firm publication date. “In Leveson’s final work on his big game hunting exploits, he describes pig-sticking on the Deccan Plateau, bear hunting in the Sheveroy Hills, and shooting tiger and panther near Hyderabad. Included are chapters on hunting elephant at Coimbatore in the Madras Presidency, bison and tiger in the Wynaad Forest, and panther in the Dehra Doon. While in the Himalayas he stalked thar, burhel, and ibex. Among the Annamullai Hills, he bagged sambur. Of further interest is a chapter on hunting bear in the Caucasus range.” (Czech). Chapters include: Deer stalking and driving; Chamois and ibex stalking; Wild-fowl shooting; Hog-hunting in India; Bear-hunting; Tiger, panther, and leopard hunting; Elephant hunting in India; Bison and buffalo hunting; Souvenirs of sport in India; The game of the Himalaya; Sport in the Doon; Sport in the Himalaya and Thibet; Unlooked-for rencontres.
