HODGES, William (1744–1797)

An original aquatint entitled “A View of the South Side of the Fort of Gwalior,” drawn by William Hodges (1744–1797) and engraved by William Byrne (1743–1805), published by John Boydell in London in 1786 as part of Hodges’ celebrated Select Views in India.

The print presents a magnificent panoramic view of the imposing hill fortress of Gwalior, one of India’s most formidable military strongholds. Rising dramatically upon an immense sandstone escarpment, the fortress dominates the surrounding plains, while a Mughal pavilion and cultivated landscape occupy the foreground, emphasizing both the natural and strategic grandeur of the site. Hodges’ masterful treatment of atmospheric perspective and light conveys the immense scale of the fortress and the distinctive geology of the plateau.

William Hodges travelled extensively throughout India between 1778 and 1784 under the patronage of Warren Hastings. His Select Views in India became the first major series of British topographical prints devoted entirely to the Indian subcontinent, predating the celebrated Oriental Scenery of Thomas and William Daniell by almost a decade. The series introduced European audiences to India’s architecture and landscapes through a sophisticated combination of accurate observation and picturesque composition.
