HODGES, William (1744–1797)

A View of the Ruins of a Palace at Gazipoor on the River Ganges

Publisher: William Hodges
London, Year: 1787

This atmospheric aquatint depicts the ruins of a riverside palace at Ghazipur (then Gazipoor), situated on the banks of the River Ganges in present-day Uttar Pradesh. The composition combines the grandeur of late Mughal architecture with the tranquillity of the river landscape, a characteristic feature of William Hodges’ picturesque vision of India.

The palace occupies the right-hand side of the composition, its lofty arcades, riverside bastions and weathered façades rising dramatically above the water’s edge. Small boats moored along the Ganges and distant river traffic animate the foreground, while expansive skies create an impressive sense of depth and atmosphere. Hodges masterfully balances architectural detail with broad tonal effects, making the monument appear both monumental and poetic.

During his travels between 1780 and 1783 as official artist to Warren Hastings, Hodges became the first professional British landscape painter to systematically record India’s architecture and scenery from direct observation. His Select Views in India introduced European audiences to India’s historic monuments through a sophisticated picturesque aesthetic and laid the foundation for later artists including Thomas and William Daniell.

The ruins at Ghazipur exemplify Hodges’ fascination with India’s architectural heritage, portraying the remains of Mughal riverfront buildings as enduring symbols of imperial history within a serene natural setting.
