HODGES, William (1744–1797)
A View of an Insulated Rock, in the River Ganges, at Jungerah
London, Year: 1786-87
₹90,000
This striking aquatint depicts an isolated rocky outcrop rising dramatically from the River Ganges at Jungerah (modern Jangirah or Jangira). Perched atop the rock is a small shrine or watchtower, reached by a steep flight of stone steps carved directly into the cliff. Local figures gather along the water’s edge while a large country boat glides past, emphasizing the river’s importance as both a commercial artery and a sacred landscape.
William Hodges masterfully balances the rugged rock formations on the left with the broad expanse of the river stretching into the distance. The calm water, distant hills and expansive sky create a sense of quiet grandeur, while the tiny architectural structure crowning the rock illustrates the close relationship between India’s natural landscape and its sacred architecture. Hodges’ careful use of aquatint allows subtle atmospheric effects and tonal gradations that were highly admired by contemporary audiences.
Executed during Hodges’ journey through northern India between 1780 and 1783, the drawing was engraved by William Byrne and published in 1787 as part of Select Views in India. The series marked one of the earliest major British illustrated works devoted entirely to Indian scenery and monuments, preceding the celebrated publications of Thomas and William Daniell by several years and profoundly influencing European perceptions of the Indian landscape.
