HODGES, William (1744–1797)

This elegant aquatint depicts a tranquil waterside mosque at Mounheer (modern Munger, Bihar), one of the oldest fortified cities along the Ganges. Seen across a broad tank, the mosque’s graceful dome emerges through dense foliage, while ornamental pavilions rising from the water and a shaded embankment create a carefully balanced composition. Tall palms punctuate the skyline, lending the scene a distinctly Indian character and reinforcing Hodges’ interest in the harmonious relationship between architecture and landscape.

Rather than presenting the mosque as a purely architectural study, William Hodges captures the serenity of the setting through subtle reflections, soft atmospheric light and carefully graduated tonal effects. The broad sheet of water acts as a mirror for the surrounding monuments, while the wooded hillside on the right frames the composition and draws the eye toward the domed structure beyond. The result is an image that combines topographical accuracy with the picturesque aesthetic that defined Hodges’ Indian views.

Drawn during Hodges’ travels through India between 1780 and 1783, the composition was engraved by William Byrne and published in 1787 in Select Views in India. The publication was the earliest substantial series of British views devoted entirely to India, offering European audiences an unprecedented visual record of the country’s architecture, landscapes and historic sites several years before the celebrated works of Thomas and William Daniell.
