HODGES, William (1744–1797)
A View of a Hindoo Monument
London, Year: 1786-87
₹90,000
This picturesque aquatint portrays a Hindoo monument set within a tranquil wooded landscape, reflecting William Hodges’ fascination with India’s historic architecture and its harmonious relationship with nature. The composition is framed by mature trees whose sweeping branches create a natural arch over a winding path. On the left stands a domed pavilion with elegant arches, while a smaller shrine-like structure occupies the right foreground, together suggesting a sacred or commemorative site that had become integrated into the surrounding landscape over time.
Unlike many of Hodges’ views that document celebrated monuments or imperial architecture, this composition focuses on the quiet beauty of a lesser-known religious structure. A solitary traveller walking along the path reinforces the sense of scale and contemplation, while the careful rendering of foliage, light and atmosphere demonstrates Hodges’ pioneering approach to landscape painting in India. Rather than presenting architecture in isolation, he depicts it as part of a living environment, where history, religion and nature coexist.
Drawn during Hodges’ travels through India between 1780 and 1783, the view was engraved by William Byrne and published in 1787 as part of Select Views in India. The series was among the earliest illustrated works to introduce European audiences to the diverse landscapes and monuments of the Indian subcontinent through the innovative aquatint process, influencing later artists such as Thomas and William Daniell.
