The true first UK edition of 1961, signed by V. S. Naipaul on the title page. The novel follows the life of Mohun Biswas, a Hindu Indo-Trinidadian born into poverty under an “inauspicious” sign. After a series of personal calamities and unsatisfying jobs, including sign-painting and journalism. He marries into the domineering and wealthy Tulsi family.
The novel was based on the life of Naipaul’s own father, Seepersad Naipaul, and is credited with launching the author into worldwide acclaim. It has been ranked by the Modern Library and Time magazine as one of the best 100 novels of the century.

Binding: Original rose-colored paper-covered boards (cloth) with gilt lettering on the spine. The dust jacket, designed by Stephen Russ, features a distinctive illustration of a house and palm trees.
Condition: There is some minor chipping on the dust jacket and wear at the top edge and spine head. Light fading and rubbing at the extremities.
