Robert Melville Grindlay
Scenery costumes and architecture cheiftly on the western side of India
Publisher : Elder Smith & co.
London, 1892
One of the most beautiful color plate books in India, with the early state of plates, text, and titles for individual parts. The subjects include scenes and views of Bombay, Golconda, Ellora, and Guzerat. Grindlay, the founder of the ANZ Grindlays Bank, came to India in 1803, worked with the East India Company, and served with the Seventh Bombay Native Infantry from 1804-1820. It is rare in such works for the name of the colorist, in this case, J.B. Hogarth, to be given. This is a reprinted edition from the original 1830 version where the original hand-coloured aquatint plates have been reproduced by chromolithography.
