Fine original hand-coloured copperplate engraved map depicting the Indian subcontinent, Persia, Southeast Asia, southern China, and the East Indies. Based upon the geographical work of Petrus Plancius and published in the celebrated Mercator-Hondius atlas, this elegant map represents one of the earliest Dutch cartographic syntheses of Asia following the establishment of the Dutch East India Company. Richly embellished with elaborate strapwork cartouches, sailing vessels, and a sea monster, it beautifully illustrates the transition from classical Ptolemaic geography to the increasingly accurate geographical knowledge acquired through European maritime exploration.
One of the most desirable early atlas maps of India and Southeast Asia produced during the Dutch Golden Age of cartography.
