Jane Austen
Pride and Prejudice
London, 1894
₹235,000
First Hugh Thompson, and first fully illustrated edition. Illustrated by Hugh Thompson throughout. The 1894 edition of Pride and Prejudice is rightly praised for its illustrations by Hugh Thomson, described as ‘Fey, anachronistic, and self-consciously escapist’ by Simon Cooke, but it is the iconic binding design by the same artist which really draws the eye. The stunning peacock stamped in gilt on the upper board reflects both the themes of wealth and display with which the novel is preoccupied, but it also suggests themes of courtship and the excesses of vanity which underlie the novel.
First Hugh Thomson illustrated edition (19 x 13 cm). Illustrated with 160 wood engravings throughout by the Irish illustrator Hugh Thomson, including a frontispiece with tissue guard. This was the first issue of Pride and Prejudice to feature illustrations throughout the text.
Binding: Hardback in its original Dark Green cloth. Rebacked spine with fresh new endpapers. Top edges gilt.
Condition: Sporadic Foxing, otherwise a very good, tight copy.
