James Fergusson
Illustrations of the Rock cut Temples of India
Publisher : John Weale
London, 1845.
James Fergusson retired a wealthy man after ten years as an indigo planter in India and was able to pursue his interest in architecture. He became a notable architectural historian and prolific author on ancient architecture, particularly that of the Indian subcontinent. This, his first work, was the first of several on the cave temples of India and is rarely found with the accompanying text volume. Fergusson used a camera-lucida to assist him in his drawings made on the spot. His work is based on first hand observations in Calcutta, where he studied remains of the ancient Indian architecture. Soon after his return to London, he shared his observations in The Rock-cut Temples of India. Abbey Travel 467. (2)
