A lavishly produced artistic interpretation of the poetry of Sir Muhammad Iqbal by Abdur Rahman Chughtai, bringing together two major figures of twentieth-century South Asian cultural history.
Popularly known as Amal-e-Chughtai, the volume combines selections from Iqbal’s poetry with an extensive sequence of compositions by Chughtai. The artist’s distinctive visual language—drawing upon Mughal and Persian traditions while incorporating his characteristic elongated figures, lyrical line and highly refined decorative ornament—provides a visual counterpart to Iqbal’s poetry.
The project was one of Chughtai’s most ambitious publishing undertakings. Many of the works were created specifically for the volume after 1950 and that the project took approximately fifteen years to bring to completion. The volume incorporates English and Urdu text, with poetry accompanied by Chughtai’s paintings, photogravures, calligraphic designs and an original etching.
This copy bears a presentation inscription reading “With my very best wishes to Mr T. J. Bata”, followed by the signature of General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq and dated 22 October 1986.
