First edition of William Lewis M’Gregor’s important early history of the Sikhs, published immediately following the First Anglo-Sikh War.

Volume I, The History of the Sikhs; Containing the Lives of the Gooroos; the History of the Independent Sirdars, or Missuls, and the Life of the Great Founder of the Sikh Monarchy, Maharajah Runjeet Singh, traces the development of Sikhism and Sikh political power through the Gurus, the independent misls and the reign of Maharajah Ranjit Singh. Volume II, The History of the Sikhs, Containing an Account of the War between the Sikhs and the British, in 1845–46, records the turbulent succession following Ranjit Singh’s death and the First Anglo-Sikh War.

M’Gregor was a surgeon serving in the East India Company’s military establishment, and his work appeared in London in 1846, giving it particular significance as a near-contemporary British account of the Sikh Empire at the moment when relations between the Lahore Darbar and the East India Company had culminated in war.

Illustrated with lithographic portraits of leading personalities of the Sikh court and other plates, including folding illustrations. Contemporary advertisements for the work describe portraits of Maharajah Ranjit Singh, Kharak Singh, Nau Nihal Singh, Gulab Singh, Dhian Singh, Suchet Singh, Jawahar Singh and Lal Singh, as well as a map of the Jalindhur Doab and a plan of the battles.
