GRINDLAY, Captain Robert Melville

A magnificent interior view of the Great Cave Temple at Elephanta Island, depicting the celebrated colossal three-headed bust of Maheshmurti (Trimurti), one of the supreme masterpieces of early Indian rock-cut sculpture. Grindlay faithfully records the dramatic atmosphere of the shrine, illuminated only by torchlight carried by attendants, while visitors stand before the immense sculpture to emphasize its monumental scale. Executed from sketches made on site in 1826, the plate ranks among the finest early nineteenth-century European depictions of the Elephanta Caves and reflects Grindlay’s pioneering documentation of India’s architectural and archaeological heritage.

Unlike many earlier travel illustrations, Grindlay’s work combines careful architectural accuracy with picturesque composition, making his Scenery, Costumes and Architecture one of the landmark illustrated works on western India.
