GRINDLAY, Captain Robert Melville
Portico of a Hindoo Temple, with other Hindoo and Mahomedan Buildings
London, Year: 1830
₹65,000
Fine original hand-coloured aquatint from Captain Robert Melville Grindlay’s celebrated Scenery, Costumes and Architecture, chiefly on the Western Side of India. Drawn by David Roberts after Grindlay’s sketches and engraved by R. G. Reeve, the plate presents an impressive architectural fantasy centred upon the richly ornamented portico of a Hindu temple overlooking a landscape of ancient and Indo-Islamic monuments.
Roberts’ masterly treatment of architectural perspective, intricate stone carving and luminous interior lighting makes this one of the most artistically accomplished plates in Grindlay’s monumental publication.
