Fine original hand-coloured aquatint from Captain Robert Melville Grindlay’s celebrated Scenery, Costumes and Architecture, chiefly on the Western Side of India. Engraved by Charles Bentley after William Westall’s celebrated drawing made on the spot in 1808, the plate depicts the monumental entrance to the Great Cave Temple of Elephanta, one of India’s most important rock-cut Hindu sanctuaries. The imposing colonnaded façade, strewn with ancient architectural fragments and framed by tropical vegetation, is rendered with remarkable archaeological accuracy and picturesque atmosphere.
Among the finest architectural plates from Grindlay’s masterpiece and one of the earliest substantial published views of the Elephanta Caves.
