GRINDLAY, Captain Robert Melville

Fine original hand-coloured aquatint from Captain Robert Melville Grindlay’s celebrated Scenery, Costumes and Architecture, chiefly on the Western Side of India. Drawn by William Purser after Grindlay’s own sketch and engraved by R. G. Reeve, the composition presents one of the earliest and most attractive published views of the sacred city of Dwarka. The towering spire of the Dwarkadhish Temple dominates the fortified waterfront, while pilgrims, fishermen and traditional sailing craft animate the foreground. Combining architectural precision with picturesque atmosphere, the plate ranks among the finest Gujarat views in Grindlay’s masterpiece and is an important visual record of one of Hinduism’s most revered pilgrimage centres.
