GRINDLAY, Captain Robert Melville

Fine original hand-coloured aquatint from Captain Robert Melville Grindlay’s celebrated Scenery, Costumes and Architecture, chiefly on the Western Side of India. Drawn by William Westall, A.R.A., after a painting by Lt. Col. Johnson, C.B., engraved by Theodore Fielding and coloured by J. B. Hogarth, the plate depicts the spectacular approach to the Bore Ghaut, the historic mountain pass linking Bombay with the Deccan Plateau. Richly atmospheric and topographically faithful, it ranks among the finest landscape views in Grindlay’s masterpiece and preserves an important record of western India’s most famous mountain route before the arrival of the railway.
