GANTZ, John (1772–1853)

An original hand-coloured lithograph by GANTZ, John (1772–1853) from the celebrated publication The Indian Microcosm, published by John Gantz & Son, Madras, in 1827. Entitled “Women Husking Grain,” the plate depicts an everyday domestic scene in southern India, illustrating women engaged in the traditional process of husking rice or grain within the courtyard of a vernacular Indian residence.

The composition records a routine aspect of nineteenth-century Indian domestic life with remarkable observational detail. Two women operate large wooden mortars with long pestles while another prepares the grain, as additional figures move about the household. The architecture, dress and working methods are carefully rendered, reflecting John Gantz’s commitment to documenting the customs, occupations and daily life of India rather than solely its monuments and landscapes.

The Indian Microcosm occupies an important place in the history of Indian printmaking as one of the earliest substantial lithographic publications produced in India. The series presents a comprehensive visual survey of Indian society during the early nineteenth century and remains highly valued for its ethnographic significance as well as its artistic merit.

Printed by John Gantz & Son, pioneers of lithographic printing in Madras, individual plates from The Indian Microcosm are increasingly sought after by collectors of colonial Indian prints, early lithography and works documenting the social history of the Indian subcontinent.
