The 10th in India, Kirkee, 1854. In Front of the Main Guard.
Year: 1854
The horses at the Kirkee cantonment were kept out in the open without shelter, as described in the Regimental History. This lithograph shows the countryside around Kirkee and the horse lines guarded by a private in the summer dress provided for the 10th’s service in India. The covered shako was a special issue for the regiment and worn with an all-white uniform. The other figures include a Troop Sergeant Major in blue stable dress and a man in fatigues with a low undress white cap. The presence of horses demonstrates that this scene was observed some time after April 1847 when the horses started to arrive. The artist, called ‘Fairlie Esq’ produced three prints of the 10th Hussars in India at this time and the lithographer, E Walker, dated them 1854, the year the regiment left India.
