First edition of this important eyewitness account of the Siege of Delhi during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, compiled from the contemporary diary and correspondence of Colonel Keith Young, Judge-Advocate General of the Bengal Army.

Young was present with the British forces during the Delhi campaign and recorded the events unfolding around him in his diary and in letters to his wife. His narrative follows the outbreak of the uprising, the movement of British forces towards Delhi, life in the besieging camp, military operations on the Ridge, and the eventual assault and capture of the city. The volume therefore preserves a detailed contemporary British military perspective on one of the central episodes of the 1857 uprising.

The papers were edited after Young’s death by his wife together with General Sir Henry Wylie Norman, who had himself served during the campaign and contributed both a memoir of Young and an introduction to the volume. Young served in the Bengal Army from 1823 until his death in 1862 and held the office of Judge Advocate General during the period of the uprising.

The work is extensively illustrated with portraits, contemporary views, photographs of Delhi and other Indian subjects, facsimiles of sketches, and campaign material, accompanied by two folding maps. Among the illustrations are views of the Taj Mahal, Chandni Chowk and the Diwan-i-Khas at Delhi, as well as reproductions of contemporary military sketches.
