A magnificent early nineteenth-century view of Barrackpore House, the country residence of the Governor-General of Bengal, situated within the extensive grounds at Barrackpore on the Hooghly River north of Calcutta.

Fraser adopts a broad panoramic viewpoint from the landscaped grounds. At left, the monumental classical portico of a pavilion or commemorative structure enters dramatically into the composition, while Barrackpore House itself extends across the middle distance. Beyond, the Hooghly River occupies the right side of the view, dotted with small craft and receding into an exceptionally expansive pale-blue sky.

The carefully arranged foreground figures; Indian attendants beside a small arched bridge and others walking across the lawn provides scale without disturbing the spacious character of the scene. Fraser’s combination of architecture, cultivated landscape and river prospect makes this one of the more elegant compositions in the Calcutta series.

James Baillie Fraser was a Scottish traveller, writer and amateur artist whose Indian drawings produced some of the most accomplished topographical views of the early nineteenth century.

His Views of Calcutta and its Environs, published in London in 1824–26, is regarded as one of the major aquatint plate books devoted to colonial Calcutta. Fraser supplied the original drawings, which were translated into aquatint by accomplished professional engravers including Robert Havell Jr. and F. C. Lewis.”
