ATKINSON, Captain George Francklin
Troops of the native allies
₹29,000
Fine hand-coloured lithograph after Captain George Francklin Atkinson depicting the Camel Corps attached to the Naval Brigade advancing towards Delhi during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Camels, cavalry, bullock carts, camp followers and local civilians animate the foreground, while the skyline of Mughal Delhi rises in the distance. Drawn from Atkinson’s firsthand experience with the Bengal Engineers and beautifully printed by Day & Son, Lithographers to the Queen, the plate provides an exceptional documentary record of the logistical organisation of the British Army during the siege of Delhi and ranks among the most engaging compositions in The Campaign in India 1857–58.
