A Farewell to Arms was Hemingway’s semi-autobiographical first-person account of American Frederic Henry, serving as a Lieutenant in the ambulance corps of the Italian Army. Although set in the war, the book is essentially a love story between the young lieutenant bearing striking similarities to Hemingway, and a young British nurse. Both a commercial and critical success, which later became an acclaimed film.
